3 players who could become next Glenn Maxwell in IPL

Glenn Maxwell was released by the Punjab Kings (PBKS) last month. He subsequently announced that he won't be entering the IPL 2026 mini-auction. The Australian all-rounder did not have a great time in the last couple of seasons in the cash-rich league, as he aggregated merely 100 runs across 17 matches in IPL 2024 and IPL 2025 combined.
Punjab Kings roped him in for INR 4.2 crore at the IPL 2025 mega-auction. However, he was ruled out of the tournament mid-season due to a broken finger and was replaced by Mitchell Owen. As the 37-year-old will remain absent from this season's IPL at least, let's take a look at some of the players who have the potential to fill his boots in the future.
Glenn Phillips has all the ingredients of being a superstar in the shortest format. He is a ferocious hitter of the ball, arguably the best fielder in world cricket, and a handy off-spinner. Phillips is also an efficient wicketkeeper.
However, it is surprising to note that he has only played eight IPL matches. He has been retained by the Gujarat Titans for the upcoming edition of the IPL. However, the franchise has released Sherfane Rutherford, who batted at No. 4 for the former champions last season. Maybe IPL 2026 could be the year when the Kiwi cricketer finally takes the league by storm.
