Abishek Porel arrested after Calcutta High Court order in rape case

Abishek Porel, the 23-year-old left-handed wicketkeeper-batter from Bengal, was arrested late on Monday, August 10, 2026, following a Calcutta High Court order. The cricketer, who has played 35 IPL matches for Delhi Capitals and was retained by the franchise for INR 4 crore, was taken into custody from Emami City. He is likely to be produced in a court in Chinsurah on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

The arrest followed a complaint lodged at Mogra police station on June 23, 2026, by a woman medical student from Karnataka. According to the complaint, the woman met Porel in January 2023 and alleged that he took her to his flat in Mankundu and established a physical relationship after promising to marry her. The woman further accused him of recording intimate videos and later using them to threaten her. She also alleged that Porel illegally confined her, isolated her and refused food to her during their relationship.

"There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today," Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh was quoted as saying on Tuesday by The Hindu.

A few months ago, Porel had denied the allegations and described them as false. The cricketer had told the media that he would address the matter once the police investigation progresses.

"I am playing well now, so things are coming up. The IPL has just ended. I am now busy with my family. Will talk about this when the police investigate. I have still not spoken to the police," Porel said, dismissing the claims.

Porel has played 116 matches for Bengal in his domestic cricket career and was born on October 17, 2002. He is the cousin of former Punjab Kings pacer Ishan Porel. He has captained the Bengal team in the past and has led his franchise, the Kolkata Royal Tigers, since the inception of the Bengal Pro T20 League.
