AFG vs BAN 2025: 'We've played poor cricket as a batting unit' - Mehidy Hasan Miraz blames it on batters for series whitewash

Bangladesh skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz has urged the 50-over side's batting unit to take added responsibility for the 3-0 series whitewash against Afghanistan. The Tigers were bowled out for 109 and 93 in the second and third ODIs of the three-match series, respectively.
The 27-year-old also highlighted the importance of putting up adequate runs on the board. Furthermore, Mehidy underscored that although an improvement was a much-needed one, it will take some time for the desired outcome to come in full effect.
"We have to target playing 50 overs. We failed to do so in the last two matches. I think we have to accept that we have played poor cricket as a batting unit. A team suffers when the batters don't take responsibility. Every batter has to take responsibility. We will keep struggling otherwise. We can't win a game without runs on the board, regardless of conditions. As a captain, I want the batters to be mentally strong. I don't expect an overnight improvement," stated Mehidy, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
The Khulna-born, who took over captaincy ever since Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down, was frank in his assessment of how Bangladesh cricket circle doesn't have a lot of players as their bench strength at the moment. He stressed on learning from the errors committed and making necessary connections.
"The coaching staff is boosting the team mentally. I should be doing it too, as a captain. We are not learning from each defeat. We are not improving as much as required. We definitely lack in certain areas but we have to move ahead with these players. We don't have a lot of players outside [the team]. We are not as bad a team as these results show, but we just have to improve and rectify our mistakes," he added.
Afghanistan whitewash Bangladesh with 3-0 domination
Bangladesh emerged victorious in the three-match T20I series. A lot was expected from the tourists as far as the 50-over leg is concerned. However, the batting, in particular, disappointed quite a lot as they went onto get clean-swept.
