Albie Morkel appointed head coach of Joburg Super Kings for SA20 season 5

Albie Morkel has been appointed head coach of Joburg Super Kings for SA20 season 5. The announcement was made on July 30, 2026, with Morkel set to lead the franchise when their campaign opens on January 18, 2027. Morkel steps into the role following the departure of Stephen Fleming, who left Joburg Super Kings earlier in July 2026 to take charge as England's Test cricket coach.

Fleming had served as head coach of the franchise across all four completed SA20 seasons. Morkel has been part of the Joburg Super Kings coaching setup since the franchise's inception in the SA20. Before moving into coaching, he had a long association with the Super Kings family through his playing career, having worn the Chennai Super Kings colours in the IPL.

"Albie Morkel has been an invaluable member of our coaching group over the years. He understands what the Super Kings stand for, has built strong relationships with our players and staff, and has played an important role behind the scenes in player development. Morkel's deep familiarity with the franchise and the South African cricket environment were cited as key factors in his appointment.

As a player, Morkel represented South Africa in 1 Test, 58 ODIs and 50 T20Is between 2004 and 2015. Across 319 T20 matches, he scored over 4,000 runs and claimed nearly 250 wickets, establishing himself as one of the format's prominent all-rounders. Most recently, Morkel served as a consultant coach with the South African team at the 2026 T20 World Cup, where South Africa reached the semi-finals.
