Ashes 2025-26: ‘Knew their plans’ - Travis Head reflects on blistering ton in Australia’s eight-wicket win in Perth

Australia stamped their authority with a commanding eight-wicket win over England in the first Test of the Ashes in Perth on Saturday, November 22. Mitchell Starc wreaked havoc with the ball, while Travis Head delivered in the second innings with a brilliant century to guide his side to victory.

Head opened in the second innings as Australia chased 205 and looked to finish the job quickly with an aggressive approach. The left-handed batter smashed 123 off 83 balls, hitting 16 fours and four sixes, and admitted that he was aware of England’s plans against him. He added that the first game has set the tone for the series and that the team is aiming to produce their best in the second Test in Brisbane.

"I don't think I can describe the knock. Good start to the series. They're a seriously good outfit and the way Starcy led us yesterday, couldn't let that slip. [Processed yet?] Not even close. I was happy to do it [open]. Knew their plans, short-pitched bowling and what they would bring. Nice to be able to play a role. Lovely start. [Who made the decision?] Coach and captain, I was keen to do it,” Head told Channel 7 after the match.

“Easily could have been out first over, go out there and see what happens. First game, to set the tone. Look forward to Brisbane now, what a start. Tried to hit the breeze. They're a seriously good bowling outfit. Made a couple of 90s here, I got 99 once - so wasted a couple. But a lovely place to bat. [Ovation] Great moment, I'm no good at getting red ink. Normally try to get off the field as quickly as possible. We'll celebrate, it's an Ashes series, we're 1-0 up, it's a fantastic start,” he added.

Speaking about the match, Starc claimed 10 for 113 in the first Test to completely dismantle the visitors. Ben Stokes also picked up a five-wicket haul, but the game ultimately swung Australia’s way, with the contest wrapping up inside just two days. Starc was the Player of the Match for his fantastic outing with the ball.

Cummins still not fully recovered as action moves to Gabba

The next encounter will now be played at Brisbane's Gabba - one of the most iconic landmarks in Australia. It will be a Day-Night fixture, as the hosts are currently awaiting the injury status of mainstay captain Pat Cummins, although the chances for the right-arm pacer's return currently hang in balance, and a decision will be made soon.
