Ashwin urges Gambhir and Gill to give Sarfaraz Khan clear role messaging

Ravichandran Ashwin has called on head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill to communicate clearly with Sarfaraz Khan about his role in the India Test squad for the Sri Lanka series, which opens with the first Test on August 15 in Galle.

Sarfaraz was added to the squad as a replacement for Sai Sudharsan, who was ruled out of the two-match series with a right toe stress reaction following a BCCI announcement. The recall brought Sarfaraz back into the Test setup after an absence of more than a year, his previous appearance having come during the three-match series against New Zealand in November 2024.

Ashwin also made clear that Dhruv Jurel is set to start ahead of Sarfaraz in the first Test, which makes the question of role clarity particularly pressing for the returning batter.

Sarfaraz's return comes with genuine competition for batting positions. Devdutt Padikkal posted a century during the tour match against SLC XI, giving the team management an additional factor to weigh before the first Test. Ashwin's point was that honest communication from the team management would allow Sarfaraz to prepare and plan without uncertainty hanging over him.

"I'll start with Jurel. Sarfaraz came into the squad because of Sai Sudharsan's injury. The messaging is very important for Sarfaraz. If you feel he is a suspect in certain conditions, you need to give him clarity. You need to tell him that he can serve the team in sub-continental conditions," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Sarfaraz has appeared in six Tests for India and holds a first-class average of 64.73, a record that reflects his sustained output at domestic level. Ashwin's concern is not about that record but about whether the team management has told Sarfaraz precisely what his brief is in these conditions.

Sarfaraz's last Test before this recall was during the New Zealand series in November 2024. He scored 150 runs in the opening match of that series, but his contributions in the following two games were limited, and he was moved to the bench for the subsequent series against Australia.

After the Australia series concluded, Sarfaraz was left out of the Test squad for over a year before Sudharsan's injury opened a path back. That extended gap is precisely why Ashwin considers the clarity of his brief from Gambhir and Gill so significant as he prepares for a potential opportunity in Sri Lanka.
