India couldn’t have asked for a more thrilling build-up to the Asia Cup 2025 final as they defeated Sri Lanka via a Super Over in Dubai on Friday. What was expected to be a dead rubber or a practice-like outing turned into one of the most exciting contests of the tournament.
India, already qualified for the Asia Cup final, rested Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka was looking to end their campaign on a high. Sri Lanka called it correctly at the toss and elected to field first.
For India, opener Abhishek Sharma continued his purple patch, smashing 61 off 31 balls with eight boundaries and two sixes. After his dismissal, Tilak Varma (49* off 34) and Sanju Samson (39 off 23) kept the momentum going. Axar Patel’s 21* off 15 ensured the Men in Blue crossed the 200-mark. The team eventually finished at 202/5, the highest total of the tournament.

Sri Lanka, in reply, were anchored by a breathtaking innings from Pathum Nissanka, who registered his first T20I century. His 107 off 58 balls, laced with seven fours and six sixes, kept the team in the hunt. He found support in Kusal Perera (58 off 32), as the duo stitched a record-breaking 127-run stand. However, wickets in the death overs affected Sri Lanka’s chase.
With 12 needed off the final over, Harshit Rana held his nerve, dismissing Nissanka on the first ball. Dasun Shanaka’s late hits brought the equation down to three required from the last ball, but Sri Lanka could only manage two, ending on 202/5, with the game going to a Super Over.
Despite Nissanka’s stunning hundred, Kusal Perera and Shanaka walked out. The gamble backfired as Arshdeep Singh removed Perera and Shanaka. Sri Lanka managed just 2 runs. In reply, India needed only three, and skipper Suryakumar Yadav wasted no time, pushing Wanindu Hasaranga for three runs off the first ball to seal the win.
