Asia Cup 2025: Range of shots played by Shubman Gill so far

Indian vice-captain Shubman Gill has been nothing short of extraordinary in the Asia Cup 2025 for the Men in Blue. The young top-order batter has been playing a crucial anchor role in most matches, complementing Abhishek Sharma, who has taken the attack to the bowlers from the outset. Gill, in contrast, has calmly played second fiddle while keeping the runs ticking and ensuring stability at the crease.
Across the five matches he played in the continental tournament, Gill scored 115 runs at an average of 23.00. The UAE pitches, being slower and more conducive to spin, required batters to play cautiously at times. Despite these challenging conditions, Gill maintained an impressive strike rate of 155.40. His highest score came against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Super Four stage, where he made 47 runs, anchoring the innings and frustrating the bowlers with his measured strokeplay.
The 25-year-old displayed a wide range of shots, effectively playing both sides of the wicket and attacking bowlers in all areas of the field. He distributed his scoring evenly, accumulating around 50 runs each side, with a boundary frequency of roughly every four balls. Gill mostly favoured the off-side, particularly through the cover region, while on the on-side, he relied on straight drives and shots down the ground. This approach allowed him to keep the scoreboard moving while minimising the risk of losing his wicket.
When it comes to bowlers, Gill has shown versatility in his approach. He has been particularly effective against spinners, scoring around 60 runs, while also punishing pacers for nearly 50 runs. The slower UAE pitches prompted teams to rely heavily on spin attacks, yet Gill’s composure and timing ensured he could counter the bowlers efficiently. He preferred playing the ball along the ground, which reduced risk and allowed him to accumulate runs steadily. Across the tournament, he struck 16 boundaries and a couple of sixes, highlighting his balanced approach.
Gill’s performances have been instrumental in guiding India to the finals, with key contributions in victories, including the crucial match against Pakistan. His ability to tackle bowlers on both sides of the wicket, managing the innings under pressure, and rotating the strike effectively has strengthened India’s position throughout the tournament. The Men in Blue will now face Pakistan in the summit clash on September 28.
