The much-anticipated Asia Cup 2025 is set to kick off on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates, with the tournament being played in the T20 format as part of preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. For the first time in history, the continental event will feature eight teams, with the final scheduled for September 28.
The last edition of the Asia Cup played in the T20 format was in 2022, where the Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan in the final to clinch the title. After much debate and uncertainty over the schedule, the high-profile tournament is now officially set to begin.
In terms of leadership, India will be captained by Suryakumar Yadav, who will lead a new-look squad. Pakistan will be led by Salman Ali Agha, while the Lankan Lions will have Charith Asalanka at the helm. Bangladesh and Afghanistan, led by Litton Das and Rashid Khan, respectively, will enter the competition as potential underdogs, and will also be key teams to watch given their strong performances in recent times.
The remaining three sides include Oman, Hong Kong, and hosts UAE, making this the most diverse Asia Cup yet. The tournament will open with a clash between Afghanistan and Hong Kong on September 9.
