Asian Games 2026: Four teams secure direct entry into knockout stage

Cricket is set to be one of the major attractions at the Asian Games 2026, which will be held in Nagoya, Japan. The multi-sport event will feature both men’s and women’s T20 tournaments, with every match carrying full international status. The organizers have confirmed that India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka have earned automatic qualification to the quarter-finals of both the men’s and women’s cricket events. The four sides received direct entry because they are Asia’s ICC Full Member nations, allowing them to bypass the preliminary stage altogether.

Their automatic qualification means they will enter the tournament with additional preparation time while the remaining teams battle through the opening round for the last available knockout spots. The decision follows the qualification structure adopted for the competition and recognizes the standing of these nations in Asian cricket.

India will enter the Games as the defending gold medallists in both categories after producing memorable campaigns at the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games. The men’s team will once again aim to defend its title under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, with Tilak Varma serving as vice-captain. Expectations will also be high for the women’s side as India looks to retain its dominance on the continental stage.

Group A consists of Afghanistan, Japan, and Nepal, while Group B features Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Oman. Each group will follow a round-robin format, with the top two teams progressing to the quarter-finals.

The men’s cricket competition is scheduled to run from September 24 to October 1, ensuring a packed week of high-intensity T20 action. Every match in the preliminary round will carry added importance, as a single defeat could significantly impact a team’s chances of reaching the knockout stage.
