Indian openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma took some time to relax during the rain interruption on Sunday, October 19, in the first ODI against Australia in Perth. Both batters had been dismissed cheaply by the Australian pace attack before the game was halted, putting India on the back foot early in the contest.
The match was stopped for over 30 minutes due to rain, marking the second interruption in the first ODI. During the break, Rohit and Gill were seen enjoying popcorn while looking out over the Perth ground from the glass pavilion, sharing light-hearted moments amid the high-pressure scenario. Their playful break offered a brief respite from the intensity of the game and a chance to refocus.
At the time of the interruption, India had scored 37/3 in 11.5 overs, with Shreyas Iyer (6)* and Axar Patel (7)* at the crease. Rohit Sharma had been dismissed for 8 runs by Josh Hazlewood, edging a delivery to second slip, where Matt Renshaw took a neat catch.
Shortly afterward, Virat Kohli was dismissed by Mitchell Starc for a duck, the first on Australian soil in 30 ODI innings. He was caught by Cooper Connolly at backward point while attempting a hard cover drive. Soon after, Indian captain Shubman Gill was dismissed by Nathan Ellis on the first ball, the inside edge carrying to wicketkeeper Josh Philippe.
Rohit, Virat fall cheaply on hyped international return
With India reeling at 37/3, all eyes turned to Iyer and Axar, who will need to spend time at the crease to stabilise the innings and bring the team back into contention. Meanwhile, the Australian bowling attack will look to exploit the damp conditions, using the moisture on the pitch to generate extra movement and dismiss the remaining Indian batters cheaply.
