AUS vs IND: Ravichandran Ashwin picks the ‘Yuvraj Singh’ of Australian cricket

When one talks about elegance and power blended into a single batting style, the name Yuvraj Singh instantly comes to mind. The former Indian all-rounder was not only a match-winner but also a performer who thrived under pressure. From his unforgettable six sixes against Stuart Broad in the 2007 T20 World Cup to his heroic 2011 World Cup campaign — where he won the Player of the Tournament — Yuvraj’s legacy remains unmatched. His fluent cover drives, impeccable timing, and fearless attitude made him a global icon and an inspiration for a generation of cricketers. Even years after his retirement, Yuvraj’s style continues to influence modern-day players across the world.
Indian spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin, known for his sharp cricketing mind and deep analysis of the game, recently drew a fascinating comparison between Yuvraj and young Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin praised the 21-year-old’s shot-making ability, particularly his off-side play, which reminded him of Yuvraj’s prime.
“The Australian batting line-up may be short on experience, but it’s full of promise. Cooper Connolly’s cover drive took me back to Yuvraj Singh’s iconic innings of 84 against Australia in the 2000 ICC Knockout. His balance, timing, and poise are so reminiscent of that era,” Ashwin remarked.
The Indian veteran highlighted that Connolly’s ability to dominate quality bowling with confidence and grace makes him one of the most exciting young batters in Australian cricket today. He further added that Australia, which has been searching for a versatile left-handed all-rounder since the retirement of Michael Bevan, might have finally found one in Connolly.

Connolly justified the praise with a remarkable unbeaten half-century in the second ODI against India on October 23, 2025. Chasing a competitive target, the left-hander anchored the innings beautifully, scoring 61 not out off just 53 balls. His innings included five well-timed boundaries and a towering six that left the spectators spellbound.
Batting at number six, Connolly exhibited maturity beyond his years. His shot selection was impeccable, and the way he handled Indian pacer Harshit Rana’s short-pitched deliveries reflected his growing confidence at the international level. Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri, who was in the commentary box, lauded Connolly for his composure and stroke play, calling him ‘a player to watch for the future.’
While Adam Zampa was named Player of the Match for his disciplined bowling performance, it was Connolly’s calm and calculated batting display that ensured Australia crossed the finish line comfortably. His partnership with the lower order under pressure proved decisive in turning the game in Australia’s favor.
