In the first ODI between Australia and South Africa, a rare and unusual moment occurred when Travis Head pulled off a brilliant, possibly deliberate but lucky run-out at the non-striker’s end off his own delivery. The unexpected dismissal left fans and players amazed by the unique turn of events.
The crucial moment came in the 49th over of the first innings when Travis Head, who had been bowling beautifully, produced a moment of brilliance in the field. Wiaan Mulder drove the ball hard back down the ground but Head stuck out his right hand. The ball deflected off his palm and crashed into the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Prenelan Subrayen was caught short of his crease with his bat still in the air as the bails lit up. What looked like a simple run suddenly turned into a vital wicket thanks to Head’s sharp awareness.

South Africa posted a formidable total of 296 for 8 in their 50 overs, a score that looked even more imposing given their blistering start. Coming back into form after a disappointing T20I series, Aiden Markram was the anchor, scoring a brilliant 82 from just 81 balls and laying the foundation for his side. He found excellent support from skipper Temba Bavuma, who contributed a valuable 65 and the aggressive Matthew Breetzke, who added a quickfire 57 from 56 deliveries.
Despite the strong foundation, the Australian bowlers, led by a sensational performance from Head, clawed their way back into the contest. At 223 for 2 in less than 40 overs, the Proteas looked set for a 330-plus total but Head’s golden arm turned the tide with a flurry of quick wickets. The spinner finished with exceptional figures of 4 for 57. He was ably supported by Ben Dwarshuis, who took two crucial wickets and Adam Zampa, who chipped in with one. The late surge of wickets ensured South Africa’s momentum was halted, leaving them with a competitive but not unassailable total. A late flurry from Mulder 31, ensured the Proteas crossed the 290-mark. Eventually Australia were bundled out for 196 in reply as Keshav Maharaj destroys Australian batting order with his maiden fifer. South Africa have registered victory by 98 runs over Australia in the opening game of the series.
