India women's skipper Harmanpreet Kaur picked up an injury and did not field against Australia in the first ODI of the three-match series at Brisbane's Allan Border Field on February 24.
Harmanpreet received some treatment on the field at the end of the 38th over of the Indian innings. She was 40 off 67 at that time and ended up with an 84-ball 53 as India put up an unimposing 214 on the board. The Indian skipper continued batting until the 44th over alongside Kashvee Gautam, who scored 43 off 44.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Harmanpreet sustained an injury to her left knee while batting. She will remain under the observation of the medical team.
“Captain Harmanpreet Kaur has not taken the field in the second innings after sustaining an injury to her left knee while batting. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring her progress. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana is leading the side in her absence,” the statement read.
It remains to be seen whether Harmanpreet’s participation will be affected in the remainder of the series. In her absence, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana took charge.
Meanwhile, Harmanpreet’s half-century led India’s fightback after they were reduced to 140 for 6 in the 34th over. Mandhana struck a half-century (58 off 68) at the top, but the remaining batting order failed to turn up, as Pratika Rawal, Shafali Varma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma walked back with single-digit scores.
The two teams will meet in the second ODI at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval on February 27. The third and final fixture will be played on March 1 at the same venue. The ODI series will be followed by a one-off Test in Perth from March 6 to 9. I
