The next generation of cricketing stars are set to light up the Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane as Australia U19 are taking on India U19 in the first Youth ODI of a three-match series on Sunday, September 21. The contest marks the beginning of an eagerly anticipated tour for India’s youngsters, who are fresh from a successful campaign in England earlier this year.
With two Youth Tests also scheduled after the ODIs, the series offers a golden opportunity for both teams to test their bench strength and prepare future internationals in competitive conditions.
All eyes will be on two names that have already made waves in Indian domestic cricket and the IPL – Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre.
Suryavanshi, known for his aggressive stroke play at the top, was the standout performer for India in the limited-overs series in England. On the other hand, skipper Mhatre, a technically sound batter, dominated the red-ball leg of the same tour with his consistency and temperament. Both cricketers will be keen to extend their purple patch and further their case for higher honours.
For India, the tour is more than just about winning matches – it’s about exposure. Playing in Australian conditions, with bouncy pitches and larger grounds, will test the adaptability of this squad. The management hopes that these experiences will prepare them for the challenges of senior international cricket in the years to come.
Australia U19, under the leadership of Simon Budge, are equally determined to start the series on a high. The squad boasts a balanced mix of batters, bowlers, and all-rounders, and will be boosted by the presence of Indian-origin talents Aryan Sharma and Yash Deshmukh. Both players are expected to feature prominently, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the contest against their country of origin.
Young quicks like Hayden Schiller and Charles Lachmund will test India’s batting depth, while batters Alex Turner and Will Malajczuk will look to anchor the hosts’ innings. With home conditions on their side, the Aussies will pose a stern challenge.
