Australia vs India 2025, 1st ODI: Weather and Pitch Report, Optus Stadium in Perth

Australia and India are all set to lock horns in the first ODI of the three-match series at Optus Stadium, Perth, on Sunday, October 19. India’s ODI tour of Australia has generated immense excitement, with Shubman Gill now leading the team in ODIs and Tests. However, the attention is on veterans Rohit and Virat, who are returning to the format for the first time since the Champions Trophy 2025 triumph.
For over a decade, the duo has carried India's batting line-up, and this series could be seen as one of their final tours Down Under. Meanwhile, Australia will be affected by injuries to players like Cameron Green and Josh Inglis, and the absence of Adam Zampa and Alex Carey for the opening game. Pat Cummins remains under watch due to a back issue, and the Aussies are balancing preparations for the upcoming Ashes with their focus on white-ball cricket. Having lost their last three ODI series, Australia will look to bounce back at home.
The weather could play a decisive role in the series opener. According to AccuWeather, there’s a 70% chance of rain on Sunday morning (October 19) in Perth, with precipitation likely to continue through the day. The match, scheduled to begin at 11:30 AM local time (9 AM IST), may face multiple interruptions, and even a delayed start cannot be ruled out. Overcast skies and moisture in the air could make conditions ideal for seam bowling, leading to both captains opting to field first after winning the toss.
The Optus Stadium pitch is one of the most challenging surfaces for batters. The bowlers will have a lot of help due to the extra bounce and pace, and can extract movement both off the seam and through the air. The venue has hosted only three ODIs so far, with teams batting second winning on two occasions. The average first-innings score is just 183, and the highest successful chase stands at 153. Australia has struggled at this venue in the past, being bowled out for 152 and 140 in their last two ODI appearances. For India, this will be their first-ever ODI at Optus Stadium,
