Australia Women (AUS W) lock horns with India Women (IND W) in the 2nd ODI of the three-match series at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, on Friday, February 27.
In the series opener, after winning the toss, Harmanpreet Kaur’s decision to bat didn’t quite pay off. India was put on the backfoot by Megan Schutt, who removed Pratika Rawal for a duck, and the top order struggled. Smriti Mandhana stood tall with 58, while Harmanpreet battled through a knee niggle for a 53. Kashvee Gautam’s 43 added late finish, but the visitors were bowled out for 214 in 48.3 overs, with Ashleigh Gardner claiming three wickets.
In reply, Alyssa Healy recorded her farewell series in Brisbane with a 50, and Beth Mooney anchored the chase with a 76. Despite a fightback from India’s spinners, Australia comfortably chased down the target in 38.2 overs, winning with 70 balls to spare.
Traditionally, the Bellerive Oval pitch hasn't been the easiest of surfaces for batters to bat on. However, the pitch is generally seen to favor batters outside the power play due to its true bounce. The Pacers will dominate with the new ball, and batters will settle after the power play.
Alyssa Healy(c), Phoebe Litchfield, Georgia Voll, Beth Mooney(w), Annabel Sutherland, Ashleigh Gardner, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Alana King, Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown
Smriti Mandhana, Pratika Rawal, Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur(c), Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh(w), Deepti Sharma, Kashvee Gautam, Shree Charani, Kranti Gaud, Renuka Singh Thakur
Indian opener Smriti Mandhana looked in great nick in the first encounter and could be the best batter in the upcoming game. The left-handed batter smashed 58 runs off 68 deliveries, lacing her innings with seven boundaries and three sixes. With the visitors trailing in the series, a lot will depend on Mandhana in the upcoming clash.
Right-arm spinner Ashleigh Gardner could make the difference with her bowling. The off-spinner bagged a three-wicket haul in the previous game and will be running high on confidence. In the recent past, she has consistently given her team breakthroughs in regular intervals and will look to do the same.
