Azmatullah Omarzai reprimanded by ICC for dissent at umpire's decision

The International Cricket Council has sanctioned Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai with a reprimand and one demerit point following a dissent incident during the second ODI against Ireland at Bready. The ruling was confirmed on August 11, 2026, the same day the match took place.

Omarzai was adjudged to have violated Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, a provision that addresses conduct involving visible disagreement with an on-field official's ruling during an international fixture. The four match officials who lodged the charge were on-field umpires Gareth Morrison and Roly Black, along with third umpire Johnny Kennedy and fourth umpire George Brolly.

The sequence of events unfolded during Afghanistan's batting in a contest that rain had trimmed to 47 overs per side. When Omarzai was dismissed in the 41st over, he did not immediately leave the crease and made his frustration clear through visible gestures directed at the decision. He subsequently acknowledged the breach and agreed to the penalty put forward by match referee Dean Cosker of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees, which meant the matter was resolved without a formal hearing.

The demerit point is the first on Omarzai's disciplinary record in 24 months. Under ICC regulations, a Level 1 offence of this nature carries a possible official reprimand, a financial penalty of as much as half of the player's match fee, and between one and two demerit points.
