Jasprit Bumrah’s cheeky stump-mic comment about Temba Bavuma on Day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa has gone viral, capturing the attention of cricket fans worldwide. The incident took place during the first Test match between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, where Bumrah is spearheading India’s bowling attack.
On the opening day of the Test, Bumrah made a significant impact with the ball, dismissing South African openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram in quick succession. Rickelton was clean bowled by Bumrah, while the wicket of Markram was secured by a catch from Rishabh Pant. The viral moment occurred in the 13th over of South Africa’s innings when Bumrah trapped the South African captain Bavuma lbw on the last ball. The umpire ignored the loud appeal, prompting Bumrah to discuss the possibility of a DRS review with his teammates.
During this discussion, the stump mic picked up Bumrah’s cheeky remark about Bavuma’s height — he said, “Bauna bhi hai b*******.”— calling attention humorously to Bavuma’s stature in a lighthearted manner. This generated widespread amusement both on the field and on social media platforms, with many fans sharing the clip as a memorable moment from the Test.

Bavuma, who captained South Africa to the 2025 World Test Championship title, returned to the playing XI after missing the recent Test series against Pakistan due to injury issues. Batting at No. 4 in this Test, Bavuma failed to make a significant impact, scoring just 3 runs off 11 balls before being dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav, caught at leg slip by Dhruv Jurel. At that point, South Africa was in trouble at 71/3.
South Africa had opted to bat first after winning the toss. India made strategic changes by dropping Sai Sudharsan and including both Pant and Jurel, while also going with four spinners complemented by the pace duo of Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Despite initial resistance from South African openers, Bumrah’s superb bowling spells shifted momentum in India’s favour, successfully reducing South Africa to a precarious position early in their innings.
