BCB removes director Nazmul Islam after players boycott BPL match

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has removed Nazmul Islam from his role as Chairman of the Board’s Finance Committee following criticism over his recent public remarks, made amid Bangladesh’s ongoing T20 World Cup venue dispute with India.

The decision was confirmed by the BCB in an official statement issued after an emergency online meeting. The move came in the wake of strong backlash from the cricketing community, including a call for a nationwide boycott of domestic cricket by the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB).

In its statement, the BCB said the decision was taken in the interest of the organization’s smooth functioning.

“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) wishes to inform that, following a review of recent developments and in the best interest of the organization, the BCB President has decided to release Mr. Nazmul Islam from his responsibilities as Chairman of the Finance Committee with immediate effect,” the BCB said.

The board clarified that the move was made in line with the powers granted to the BCB President under its constitution and outlined an interim arrangement to ensure continuity.

“The decision has been taken in accordance with the authority vested in the BCB President under Article 31 of the BCB Constitution and is aimed at ensuring the continued smooth and effective functioning of the Board’s affairs. Until further notice, the BCB President will assume the role of Acting Chairman of the Finance Committee," the BCB added.

The BCB also sought to underline its stance on player welfare amid the controversy.

“The BCB reiterates that the interests of the cricketers remain its highest priority. The Board remains fully committed to upholding the honor and dignity of all players under its jurisdiction.”

The development comes at a sensitive time for Bangladesh cricket, with tensions escalating over World Cup-related issues and increasing scrutiny on board governance and player relations.
