BCCI issues fresh warning to Mohsin Naqvi over Asia Cup trophy

The prolonged stand-off over the Asia Cup trophy shows no sign of resolution, with Mohsin Naqvi, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman, still in possession of the silverware.

According to NDTV, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a fresh warning to Naqvi, urging him to hand over the trophy to India or risk the matter being escalated to the International Cricket Council (ICC) during next month’s meeting in Dubai.

The controversy began when the Indian team declined to accept the trophy directly from him during the post-match presentation ceremony in Dubai owing to Naqvi’s dual role as Pakistan’s Interior Minister. Following the incident, Naqvi reportedly took the trophy and secured it in his Dubai office.

Efforts to resolve the issue have been further strained by Naqvi’s reported demands. He has allegedly insisted that a formal function be organised for India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav to personally collect the trophy from him, conditions the BCCI has rejected. The Indian board maintains that the trophy and medals should instead be sent directly to the ACC headquarters for official collection.

Sources indicate that Afghanistan and Sri Lanka’s cricket boards support India’s stance. However, Naqvi has so far refused to budge, prompting the BCCI to prepare a formal protest at the upcoming ICC board meeting in Dubai.

The BCCI has also warned Naqvi against making complaints to ICC members, after he reportedly claimed he was made to look like a joker on the Asia Cup dais when the Indian team refused to approach him for the presentation.

Speaking about the tournament, India clinched the Asia Cup 2025 title after defeating Pakistan in the final. The Men in Blue defeated their arch-rivals thrice in the continental tournament and maintained an unbeaten run throughout the event.
