Ben Stokes slams Headingley omission from 2027 Ashes as shambolic
England captain Ben Stokes has expressed strong frustration at the exclusion of Headingley from the 2027 men's Ashes schedule. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that the five-Test series will take place at Trent Bridge, Lord's, Edgbaston, the Rose Bowl and the Oval, leaving both Headingley and Old Trafford without a fixture.
Stokes voiced his displeasure, responding to a post about the venue announcement. He commented in reference to England's recent victory by an innings and 103 runs over Pakistan at Leeds, highlighting the ground's current condition and importance to English cricket.
"Shame is an understatement [to be honest]. Shambolic would be more appropriate," said Stokes as quoted by The Independent.

The omission has drawn criticism from multiple quarters within English cricket, with former captain Joe Root previously describing the absence of northern venues as a shame and pointing to England's strong record at Headingley. Harry Brook echoed similar sentiments, noting the ground's significance in recent Ashes history and his personal preference for batting there.
Brook stated that he has enjoyed considerable success at the venue in Test cricket. He referenced the 2019 Ashes when Stokes played an exceptional innings, and the most recent Ashes Test at Leeds where England kept the series alive. I think we've had a hell of a lot of success here in Test match cricket, Brook said. I personally love playing here. It's one of my favourites, if not my favourite ground to bat on. It is disappointing, but we don't make those decisions. The hierarchy make them and we just get told where to play, he added.
The Test pitch at Headingley has recently been upgraded and is now considered among the best in the country, yet the ground will not host a Test until 2029. This timeline has raised questions about the scheduling logic, particularly given the ground's historical importance to English cricket and its current playing surface quality. In 2019, Stokes' unbeaten 135 inspired England to chase 359, with a final-wicket partnership alongside Jack Leach ensuring the Ashes series remained alive. That performance cemented Headingley's place in modern English cricket folklore and underscores why its exclusion from the 2027 schedule has provoked such strong reactions.
Both Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and West Yorkshire mayor Tracy Brabin have expressed their disappointment in a letter to ECB chair Richard Thompson. The political representatives have joined the chorus of voices questioning the venue selection. Headingley will host the women's Ashes Test in 2027, while Old Trafford will stage a men's Test against opponents still to be determined.
Both grounds are scheduled to return to the Ashes rotation in 2031, when the series returns to England. Trent Bridge in Nottingham will be the most northern venue for the 2027 men's Ashes, marking a significant shift in the traditional distribution of Test matches across England's regions.
