The Big Bash League recorded its highest ever attendance for a single day on January 4, as a total of 105,767 fans attended the matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Optus Stadium.
Yesterday’s attendance broke a decade-long record, eclipsing the 101,327 fans who came through the gates for matches at the MCG and WACA Ground on January 2 in BBL season 5.
At the MCG, a crowd of 68,124 watched a thrilling run chase as the Renegades reached 174 with one ball to spare and became the first team to raise the Melbourne Mace.
It was the highest attended match since BBL season 6 and the third largest crowd in the history of the League.
The day’s second BBL season 15 match saw the Perth Scorchers defeat the Adelaide Strikers by 33 runs in front of 37,643 fans.
In Sydney, 49,574 attended Day 1 of the fifth Ashes Test, taking total attendance across the three matches to 155,341 – the second highest attended day of Australian cricket behind the record set on Boxing Day.
The landmark day follows a season of strong crowds across BBL season 15, with cumulative attendance through the first 23 games the highest since BBL season 7.
Alistair Dobson, Executive General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, said:
“Yesterday was a landmark day and showcases the popularity and strength of the Big Bash. To set a new single day attendance record of 105,767 is a proud moment for the Big Bash Leagues and we thank all those who attended or watched on an incredible day for cricket.
“The atmosphere at the MCG last night was electric and the match was an instant classic. KFC BBL|15 is delivering incredible performances, record run chases and a continued a trend of nail-biting finishes in front of massive crowds.
“With two huge weeks ahead before a blockbuster finals series, we look forward to seeing packed venues around the country for the remainder of the summer.”
