Brydon Carse replaced by Sonny Baker as ECB investigation continues

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Monday, August 24, that Brydon Carse has been withdrawn from the squad for England's upcoming Test against Pakistan at Lord's, with Sonny Baker named as his replacement. Carse will not be considered for selection while the ECB's internal investigation remains open.

Video footage emerged on Sunday, showing Carse in handcuffs being led away by police outside a Derby nightclub on the previous night. As per various reports, Carse was briefly detained but was not formally arrested and was released without charge. The precise reason police placed him in handcuffs has not been publicly confirmed.

The incident occurred while Carse was celebrating Durham's County Championship win over Derbyshire. England captain Ben Stokes and fellow Durham seamer Matthew Potts were also visible in the footage near Carse at the time of the incident.

Carse had been included in England's squad for the opening two Tests of the home series against Pakistan. He did not feature in the playing eleven for the first Test at Headingley and was subsequently released back to Durham to play County Championship cricket, which is a standard ECB arrangement for squad members who miss out on selection.

His participation in Durham's fixture against Derbyshire was part of that arrangement, allowing him to maintain match fitness and form ahead of a potential call-up for the Lord's Test. The nightclub incident took place during that period, prompting the ECB to open an investigation and immediately remove him from contention for the second match.

With Carse ruled out, Baker has been added to the England squad for the Test beginning on Thursday at Lord's. The ECB has confirmed that Carse will remain unavailable for selection for the duration of the investigation, though no timeline for its conclusion has been provided.
