Bumrah Stays No. 1 as Harry Brook Reclaims Top Spot in ICC Test Rankings
Harry Brook moved back to the top of the ICC Men's Test batting rankings on August 19, 2026, ending Travis Head's stay at No. 1. Head fell four places to fourth after managing only 22 and 17 in the Darwin Test, a match Bangladesh won by nine wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Brook now holds a 12-point advantage over Joe Root, who sits second, with Steve Smith in third. Across the top four positions, 33 rating points separate Brook, Root, Smith and Head, meaning the standings remain open to change. This is the fourth occasion Brook has reached the summit of the Test batting rankings, having previously held the position in December 2024.
Jasprit Bumrah kept his place at the top of the ICC Men's Test bowling rankings. The India pacer was withdrawn from the full Sri Lanka tour before it began, yet his accumulated rating points were enough to keep him ahead of the field.
The nine-wicket win in Darwin triggered movement across both batting and bowling lists. Smith was among the few Australian batters to show resistance, contributing 71 in the first innings and 44 in the second, and those runs were enough to lift him to third in the batting table.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto made the most of his only innings, scoring 84, and climbed nine places to reach a career-best 20th position in the batting rankings. That rise took him past Ravindra Jadeja and Liton Das in the process.
Hasan Mahmud was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers. He finished with nine wickets across the match, with his first-innings return of six wickets earning him the Player of the Match award. Those figures pushed Mahmud up 26 positions to 38th in the Test bowling rankings. Mehidy Hasan Miraz also made an impression, taking five wickets in Australia's second innings to advance three places to 24th in the same list.
The ICC Test batting standings are unlikely to stay static for long. Brook's 12-point buffer over Root is narrow, and with 33 points covering the top four, a strong series of performances from any of those batters could redraw the order quickly.
Two series are expected to influence the next update. England face Pakistan in a Test series, while Australia and Bangladesh meet again in the second match of their two-Test contest. Both fixtures carry enough weight to move the top of the batting rankings.
Bumrah's position at the head of the bowling table will also attract attention. His absence from the Sri Lanka series means he will not add to his tally during that assignment, and a strong showing from a rival bowler in either of the upcoming Tests could narrow the gap at the top.
