Congress MP Shashi Tharoor blasts Team India after crushing defeat to England in fourth T20I

India‘s disappointing run in T20I cricket continued on Thursday after England registered a commanding nine-wicket victory in the fourth T20I at Bristol to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. The defeat not only sealed another bilateral series loss for the reigning T20 World Cup champions but also drew sharp criticism from senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who described the performance as “one humiliation too many.”
Shortly after England wrapped up the chase with ease, Tharoor shared his reaction on X, expressing disbelief over India’s performance. His comments came after another underwhelming display from the Indian side, which has now suffered successive bilateral T20I series defeats for the first time since 2019. India had entered the England tour on the back of a 2-0 series loss to Ireland, raising fresh concerns over the team’s form despite lifting the T20 World Cup just four months ago in Ahmedabad.
Tharoor’s post quickly gained traction across social media, with several fans echoing his disappointment. Many questioned India’s inability to carry forward the momentum from their World Cup triumph, while others pointed to recurring issues in both batting and bowling that have left the team struggling in overseas conditions.
“I’m truly speechless. Dumbfounded. Gobsmacked. This is one humiliation too many. There is literally nothing to be said,” he wrote.

Asked to bat first, India once again endured a shaky start as England’s pace attack removed key batters early. Captain Shreyas Iyer stood tall amid the collapse, producing an unbeaten 80 off 49 deliveries to guide India to 158/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite his determined effort, the visitors finished well below what appeared to be a competitive total on a batting-friendly surface.
England made light work of the chase. Harry Brook played a sensational unbeaten knock of 79 from only 35 balls, attacking the Indian bowlers from the outset. Phil Salt provided excellent support with an unbeaten 59 as the hosts raced to the target in just 13.5 overs while losing only one wicket.
The ease with which England chased the target highlighted India’s struggles with the ball, as none of the bowlers managed to apply sustained pressure or build partnerships through wickets.
The result has further intensified scrutiny on Iyer’s captaincy. Taking charge after India’s World Cup-winning campaign, Iyer has endured a difficult start to his tenure, overseeing back-to-back bilateral T20I series defeats while attempting to rebuild a squad in transition. Although the management has backed a long-term approach, the lack of consistency in both departments has become a growing concern. India’s batting has repeatedly relied on individual brilliance, while the bowling attack has failed to defend modest totals against quality opposition.
India will now head to Southampton for the fifth and final T20I on Saturday, hoping to salvage some pride and avoid a 4-0 series scoreline. A victory would provide a much-needed boost after a difficult tour, while another defeat would only deepen concerns surrounding the team’s direction ahead of its next international assignments.
