Having made his international debut in 2011, Rahane went on to represent India in 85 Tests, 90 ODIs, and 20 T20Is, amassing over 8,000 international runs across a decorated 15-year career.

While he excelled across white-ball cricket and led Kolkata Knight Riders in his final IPL campaign, Test cricket remained his primary canvas. Rahane became India’s dependable middle-order anchor on difficult foreign tracks, scoring gritty centuries in England, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. His masterclass 103 at Lord’s in 2014 laid the foundation for a historic Indian Test victory on a seam-friendly pitch.

However, his defining moment as a leader arrived during the legendary 2020–21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Stepping up as captain after a devastating collapse in Adelaide, a severely depleted Indian squad rallied under Rahane’s calm stewardship to secure an iconic 2-1 series victory in Australia. Reflecting on his departure, Rahane highlighted that proper timing was as crucial off the pitch as on it: “The reality of life is that everything has a beginning and everything has an end… Today, I feel the timing is right for me to move on,” he expressed in his farewell.
