Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a significant setback just when their IPL 2026 campaign appeared to be gathering momentum. With the race for the playoffs entering a decisive phase, the five-time champions have now lost one of their most impactful overseas stars to injury. The timing could hardly have been worse for CSK, who are currently fighting to stay inside the top four and keep their qualification hopes firmly alive heading into the final stretch of the league stage.
The franchise has already battled multiple fitness concerns this season, and the latest development has now added further uncertainty to their campaign ahead of the crucial clash against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow.
Chennai Super Kings confirmed on Wednesday, May 13, that English all-rounder Jamie Overton has returned to the United Kingdom after suffering a right thigh injury. The franchise shared the update through its official social media channels, stating that the player will undergo “further assessment and management” back home. His absence at this stage of the competition is undoubtedly a huge concern for CSK.
Overton’s injury comes only days after he produced a match-winning performance against Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk. In a high-scoring encounter where LSG raced to 91/1 during the Powerplay, the Englishman helped CSK pull things back brilliantly with a three-wicket spell. His effort played a major role in restricting the visitors to 203 before Chennai completed a thrilling chase in the final over.
The injury blow also leaves CSK with selection headaches. The franchise recently brought in Karnataka batter Macneil Noronha as a replacement for Ramakrishna Ghosh, but there is currently no direct like-for-like all-round replacement available in the squad.
As a result, Chennai may now be forced to alter their overseas combination in upcoming matches. Australian pacer Spencer Johnson is one of the options likely to come into consideration if CSK decide to strengthen their bowling attack.
The situation becomes even more complicated with veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni yet to feature this season. Reports also suggest that Dhoni did not travel with the squad to Lucknow for the May 15 fixture, adding more intrigue around Chennai’s plans for the remainder of the campaign.
Currently sitting fifth on the points table with 12 points from 11 matches, CSK still remain in control of their playoff destiny. However, injuries to key personnel could make the path considerably tougher in the coming days.

Overton emerged as one of Chennai Super Kings’ standout performers in IPL 2026 and established himself as a genuine match-winner during the season. The English all-rounder consistently delivered with both bat and ball and quickly became an important part of CSK’s balance in the playing XI.
In 10 matches this season, Overton picked up 14 wickets at an impressive average of 17.78 while maintaining an economy rate of 8.89. Apart from his bowling contributions, he also played several impactful cameos lower down the order, scoring 136 runs at a strike-rate of 158.13.
His ability to break partnerships, bowl under pressure and provide explosive runs in the death overs made him one of CSK’s most valuable players this year. With the playoffs race intensifying, Chennai will certainly feel the absence of a player who contributed heavily to their turnaround after a difficult start to the season.
