Daryl Mitchell dethroned as Shubman Gill regain top position in ICC ODI batting rankings

The International Cricket Council (ICC) released its latest weekly rankings update, signalling major shake-ups across all three formats of international cricket. Highlighting the mid-year updates, changes in player availability during recent international fixtures have reshaped the summit of the 50-over format. Concurrently, standout individual performances in the Test arena and explosive displays during T20 World Cup qualification/bilateral series have triggered seismic shifts in player ratings.

In a major development at the peak of the 50-over game, India’s star opener Shubman Gill has moved back into the No. 1 spot on the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings. The shift came following New Zealand‘s recent ODI series against the West Indies. The absence of right-handed batter Daryl Mitchell, who had maintained the top spot since January, caused his rating points to drop slightly, opening the door for Gill to reclaim the highest ranking in 50-over cricket.

The bowling chart in ODIs also witnessed a notable entry inside the top ten. Namibian left-arm spinner Bernard Scholtz leaped five spots to reach 7th overall following his key contributions in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series against Nepal and the Netherlands in Utrecht.

In the Test realm, West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves produced a historic display against Pakistan in Trinidad. His rare feat of bowling five consecutive maiden overs helped him jump 21 spots to 48th among Test bowlers and eight places up to 9th in the Test all-rounders category. Teammate Jayden Seales moved up five slots to 24th among Test bowlers, while Pakistan quick Mohammad Abbas climbed nine places to 17th. Pakistan’s Babar Azam also saw positive movement, gaining four positions to land at 15th for Test batters after scoring his 32nd Test half-century.

India’s white-ball dominance was on full display in the latest T20I updates following their 3-0 series sweep over Zimbabwe in Harare. Fifteen-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi made one of the largest leaps in recent ranking history. After claiming his maiden Player of the Series award with 151 runs at an average of 50.33, the teenager vaulted 230 places to secure a career-best ranking of 48th.

At the top of the T20I batting standings, India’s Ishan Kishan consolidated his position as the world’s No. 1 ranked T20I batter. Following an explosive 81-run knock in the second T20I against Zimbabwe, Kishan reached a career-high rating of 916 points, the third-highest T20I batting rating in history, surpassed only by teammate Abhishek Sharma (931) and England’s Dawid Malan (919). Although finishing the series at 910 points, Kishan comfortably leads second-placed Sahibzada Farhan (848) and holds a higher peak rating than former Indian greats Suryakumar Yadav (912) and Virat Kohli (909).

Further Indian gains saw Tilak Varma climb two places to 6th, Shreyas Iyer jump seven spots to 24th, and spinner Ravi Bishnoi leap 31 slots to 41st in the T20I bowling list. For Zimbabwe, Ryan Burl moved to joint-85th among batters, while tall pacer Blessing Muzarabani climbed 10 slots to 26th.
