Deep Dasgupta names Team India’s key batter for Sri Lanka Test series

Team India are set to begin their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka on August 15, marking the start of another crucial assignment in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. Before the series gets underway, the Indian side has already started its preparations with a three-day warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) XI on Thursday. As anticipation builds for the red-ball contest, former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta has identified a player who could make the biggest difference for the visitors.

Ahead of the much-awaited Test series, Dasgupta picked wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant as India’s most important player. Dasgupta explained why Pant’s presence in the middle order could be India’s biggest advantage, particularly against Sri Lanka’s spin-heavy bowling attack.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former India cricketer described Pant as a genuine student of the game and one of India’s biggest match-winners in the longest format. The former wicketkeeper also stressed that India’s batting unit must avoid falling into a defensive mindset against Sri Lanka’s spin attack. Instead, he believes the visitors should look to put the bowlers under pressure, with Pant capable of leading that aggressive approach.

“He is very important for India in this series. Rishabh is a proper cricket geek who can talk cricket for 24 hours. Whenever I’ve spoken to him, it’s always been about cricket. Though from the outside, he probably looks different, he’s a proper cricket guy. He is India’s match-winner, and it’ll be important for the Indian batters not to be too defensive and take the fight to the opposition bowlers,” Dasgupta said.

Dasgupta further pointed to Sri Lanka’s likely reliance on left-arm spinners Dunith Wellalage and Prabath Jayasuriya, saying Pant’s record and fearless mindset against that type of bowling make him even more valuable. According to Dasgupta, Pant naturally forces bowlers to alter their plans because of his attacking reputation, and left-arm spinners, in particular, often find it difficult to settle against him.

“Wellalage and Jayasuriya are both left-arm spinners, which makes Pant the batter even more important for India. Rishabh already has a reputation when he enters the crease. On top of that, it’s enhanced when there is a left-arm spinner bowling. Pant’s presence will be very important for India in this series,” he added.

Sri Lanka are expected to prepare spin-friendly surfaces, making the battle between India’s batters and the home side’s slow bowlers one of the defining contests of the series.

Pant heads into the series carrying the responsibility of anchoring India’s middle order while also providing the attacking spark that has made him one of the world’s most dangerous Test batters. With Shubman Gill leading a relatively young Indian side, Pant’s experience and fearless style could play a vital role in determining the outcome of the series.
