Devdutt Padikkal scores second consecutive Test century as India dominate 2nd Test in Colombo
Devdutt Padikkal has scored his second consecutive Test century of the India tour of Sri Lanka, reaching three figures during the 2nd Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Sunday, August 23. The left-hander carried his outstanding form directly from the opening Test in Galle, where he had posted 167 off 230 balls in the first innings, into the second and final match of the series.
Padikkal came into the series as a replacement for Sai Sudharsan, who was ruled out with a stress fracture of the toe. Stepping in at No. 3, he made an immediate impact at Galle and has now backed that performance up with another century in Colombo, taking his first-class average above 44 in the process. His back-to-back hundreds have been among the defining contributions of the series for India.
India have entered this match already holding a 1-0 series lead after winning the 1st Test at Galle by 165 runs. A draw in Colombo would be enough for India to seal the series, meaning Padikkal's century has arrived at a moment of considerable significance for the touring side.
Padikkal's innings of 167 in the Galle encounter, played between August 15 and 19, was central to India's victory in that match. That knock helped India build the platform from which they eventually won by 165 runs and moved into a commanding 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
The century at Galle was particularly notable because Padikkal was playing in an unfamiliar situation, having been drafted in as a late replacement for Sudharsan. His ability to settle quickly at No. 3 and convert his start into a substantial score underlined the quality of form he carried into the Colombo Test. The innings demonstrated both his temperament and his capacity to perform under pressure in conditions that can be challenging for visiting batters.
His first-class average climbing above 44 following the Colombo century reflects the consistency he has shown across the tour. For a player who entered the series as a replacement, Padikkal has made a compelling case for a permanent place in India's Test batting order.
The 2nd Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club is a significant match for both sides. India, leading 1-0, need only a draw to win the series, while Sri Lanka must win to level. The home side are facing the match with notable absentees, as Dinesh Chandimal is unavailable due to concussion protocols and there are injury concerns surrounding Kamindu Mendis.
These absences have placed additional pressure on Sri Lanka's batting and all-round resources at a ground where India have already demonstrated strong form throughout this tour. The loss of Chandimal, an experienced middle-order batter, and the uncertainty around Mendis represent a significant blow to Sri Lanka's hopes of mounting a series-levelling victory.
Padikkal's second century of the series has further reinforced India's position as the match progresses on the opening day. With the series lead already secured and a weakened Sri Lanka side facing them, India will be looking to press home their advantage and complete a series win on Sri Lankan soil.
