Dinesh Chandimal taken to hospital after shoulder and neck injury in Galle Test
Dinesh Chandimal was taken to hospital for precautionary scans after sustaining a shoulder and neck injury while fielding during India's second innings on August 18, 2026, the fourth day of the first Test at Galle International Stadium.
The incident occurred in the fourth over of India's second innings. Chandimal sprinted from deep midwicket across to deep square leg and threw himself horizontally to cut off a shot from KL Rahul. He landed hard on his shoulder and tumbled, his neck and shoulder contorting under him on impact. Medical staff attended to him on the field before he was escorted off the ground.
Pasindu Sooriyabandara came on as the substitute fielder to cover Chandimal's position. Sri Lanka subsequently arranged for Chandimal to be transported to hospital, where scans were conducted to assess the full extent of the damage.
Should the hospital scans confirm a significant neck injury, Sri Lanka would be eligible to apply for a like-for-like concussion replacement, allowing another player to take Chandimal's place for what remains of the Test. Sooriyabandara, who was already fielding as the substitute, is the additional top-order batting option available in the Sri Lanka squad for this series.
The first Test at Galle International Stadium runs from August 15 to 19, 2026. India compiled 462 in their first innings, and Sri Lanka were bowled out for 284 in reply, leaving the hosts 178 runs behind before the fourth day's play began. India pushed the lead above 250 runs in the first session of the fourth day. Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill los their wickets in the first session.
Chandimal managed only 4 runs in Sri Lanka's first innings, so his contribution with the bat had already been limited before the injury occurred. His absence from the field adds to the pressure on a Sri Lanka side already chasing a substantial deficit, and whether he will be available to bat in the second innings will hinge entirely on the outcome of the hospital assessment.
