'Don't associate me with fake news' - Ashwin downs parody statement on India vs Pakistan at Asia Cup

Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly refuted a fake statement attributed to him on social media. The veteran spinner, known for his candid opinions shared through his YouTube channel and show Ash Ki Baat, was falsely linked to a controversial statement regarding India vs Pakistan fixtures in two different tournaments.

A viral post claimed that Ashwin had said the India vs Pakistan match in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) was cancelled due to a lower stake of money involved, while the same fixture in the upcoming Asia Cup was going ahead because of the spike in monetary engagements and guaranteed returns through viewership and other aspects.

“Small money is involved, so World Championship of Legends got cancelled, but India is still playing against Pakistan in Asia Cup and BCCI hasn’t cancelled it because the amount of money decides the level of patriotism,” the fake post went on to quote Ashwin as saying.

The off-spinner was quick to shut down the false claim, issuing a sharp rebuttal on social media. He wrote, “Don’t associate me with this fake news. Shame on those who trigger all this.”

Several former cricketers and public figures have voiced their opinions on the cancelled match, offering contrasting views and perspectives on the situation. The India–Pakistan match in the WCL was officially called off on July 20. Following the cancellation, the organizers issued a public apology, acknowledging the disappointment caused to fans and former Indian players. Notably, legendary batter Shikhar Dhawan had withdrawn from the match, with Suresh Raina later confirming his non-participation as well.

Meanwhile, the Asia Cup is set to take place in the UAE from September 9 to 28, with India and Pakistan placed in the same group, setting the stage for potential high-stakes encounters between the arch-rivals. Ashwin’s strong rebuttal comes amid growing concerns about the spread of misinformation involving public figures and sensitive topics within the cricketing world.
