The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced their 15-player England Lions squad for their upcoming four-day matches against South Africa A commencing from next week. The first game is set to take place in Arundel from May 22, before moving on to Beckenham for the second game, starting from May 29.
Warwickshire all-rounder and England international Dan Mousley has been named captain of the side following a great start to the domestic summer. The left-handed batter has scored 295 runs at an average of 36.87 with one century to his name. It is also worth mentioning that amongst the 15-player squad, Mousley is the only player with prior England experience.
Meanwhile, both Durham’s Ben McKinney and Glamorgan’s Asa Tribe find themselves in the squad as top-order batters. The duo were amongst the few openers touted to replace Zak Crawley in the England squad for their Test series against New Zealand, with the place eventually going to McKinney’s Durham teammate Emilio Gay.
Tribe and McKinney are also amongst the five players in the squad who travelled to Australia with the England Lions during the Winter as a shadow tour to the Ashes. Others include Eddie Jack, Tom Lawes and Mitchell Staney.
On the other hand, seven players have formed part of the Lions’ squad for the first time in their careers, with those being Charlie Allison, Henry Crocombe, Ben Geddes, Ben Mayes, Alfie Ogborne, James Sales, and Naavya Sharma.
“We have selected an exciting squad that brings together those players that are potentially next in line for England selection, alongside some of the most exciting talent in the game. We have a core of players who toured Australia with the Lions in the winter as well as new names who have been rewarded for their form in the Rothesay County Championship this season. These matches provide an opportunity to perform and execute their skills against a strong international side,” England Men’s Performance Director, Ed Barney, said in the official release.
