Elated Sarfaraz Khan posts on social media after India call-up for Sri Lanka Tests

Sarfaraz Naushad Khan marked his return to India's Test squad with an Instagram post on Sunday, August 9, 2026, posing in a Team India vest and sporting a broad smile. The image captured the 28-year-old's delight at being handed another opportunity at the highest level after a substantial gap.

The BCCI posted an official statement to confirm that the right-handed batter would be joining Shubman Gill and Co. in Colombo ahead of the first Test, scheduled to be held in Galle from August 15.

The board's announcement followed hours after India wrapped up a six-wicket victory in their only warm-up fixture of the tour, a match played against Sri Lanka Cricket XI at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo. Sarfaraz is expected to join the touring party in Colombo before Shubman Gill's side heads to Galle for the series opener.

Sarfaraz received his Test cap, numbered 311, when he made his debut against England on February 15, 2024. A right-handed middle-order batter who can bowl leg-break and also keep wickets, he represents Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. His most recent Test appearance before this call-up came in November 2024, against New Zealand, and he had not featured in a Test for India at any point in 2025 or in the early months of 2026.

One of the standout moments of his brief Test career arrived in October 2024, when he struck 150 against New Zealand at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during his fourth Test match.

His return to the squad gives India a proven middle-order option in Asian conditions. Sarfaraz's record in domestic cricket has long been exceptional, and his Test century against New Zealand demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure at the international level.
