Shubman Gill has been leading India from the front on his maiden tour as Test captain. He is standing in England's way of a series win on the final day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Shubman and KL Rahul batted with a lot of resolve in the last two sessions on Day 4, after India lost two wickets without getting a run on the board in their second innings. They were trailing England's first-innings lead by 310 at that stage.
However, Shubman and Rahul weathered the storm with their phenomenal partnership. The former was batting at an impressive strike rate, dispatching the bad deliveries to the boundary in the first phase of his innings. However, once he got himself set at the crease, he put a price on his wicket and frustrated the England bowlers by showing phenomenal grit and determination.
He continued from an overnight score of 78 off 167 balls on Day 5. The right-handed batter lost KL Rahul after the duo added a stunning partnership of 188 off 417 balls. Rahul was out to a ball that kept low from Ben Stokes. Shubman also had to contend with such deliveries, but he managed to survive.
In the 83rd over, Shubman brought up his fourth century in the Test series, steering a delivery from Chris Woakes through point to take a single. He raised his bat and blew a kiss with it as well. The 25-year-old was fittingly appreciated for his remarkable batting effort by the spectators at Old Trafford as they gave him a standing ovation.
Shubman became the first player to register four centuries in their debut Test series as captain. Five others - Warwick Armstrong, Don Bradman, Greg Chappell, Virat Kohli and Steven Smith - had three each in their debut series at the helm.
