The crowd at Headingly rose to its feet as India’s young sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal delivered a scintillating century against a strong England side on Day 1 of the first Test. It was a special moment, as Jaiswal became the fifth Indian to score a century in his maiden Test innings on English soil.
India were invited to bat first by England captain Ben Stokes, and it went well in the visitors’ favour. The innings began with a gritty 91-run opening stand between Jaiswal and KL Rahul. However, just before lunch, the hosts struck back with back-to-back wickets—removing Rahul and debutant Sai Sudharsan—to claw their way into the contest. The 23-year-old Jaiswal held firm at one end with a composed yet aggressive approach.
In a masterful innings of 100 off 155 deliveries, Jaiswal displayed great intent, finding boundaries all around the ground and putting pressure on the English bowlers. His celebration matched the moment—leaping in joy and letting out a roar as he completed the run to reach his milestone, visibly pumped and soaking in the applause from the Headingley crowd. Jaiswal’s innings eventually ended on 101 runs, when he was cleaned up by Stokes.

On what appeared to be a good batting surface, India got off to a strong start on the opening day of the first Test. Following a patient knock from Rahul and a brilliant century from Jaiswal, skipper Shubman Gill also rose to the occasion. Coming in at 92 for 2, Gill played with positive intent and brought up a fluent half-century on his captaincy debut.
Meanwhile, it was a challenging day for the English bowlers. Despite maintaining decent lines and lengths, they were outclassed by some exceptional batting from the Indian lineup. Pacer Brydon Carse and Stokes picked up one and two wickets respectively, but both conceded runs at a brisk rate. Veteran Chris Woakes had an off day, leaking 60 runs in 13 overs and struggling to find rhythm.
