ENG vs IND 2026: 1st T20I Match Preview
England square off against India in the first T20I at the Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street, on Wednesday, July 1. The two behemoths of international cricket are set to lock horns in a five-match T20I series in the United Kingdom.
Harry Brook-led England had an interesting campaign in the T20 World Cup earlier this year. They took time to hit their straps, but once they did, the two-time champions became a force to be reckoned. The Three Lions went on to reach the semi-final, where they were defeated by eventual champions India despite a remarkable century by Jacob Bethell.
Meanwhile, India will look to turn things around after losing to Ireland 0-2 in the two-match T20I series earlier this month. The Men in Blue have received a major boost, with mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy back in the side. His four-over spell will be crucial. Shreyas Iyer started his T20I captaincy tenure with a defeat but he knows how to help his team make a comeback.
Bowlers are going to get some assistance, if not a lot, from the surface at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street. The new ball will seam and swing inside the power play, and the opening batters in both teams will have to be wary. However, if a batter gets set at the crease, a lot of runs are there for the taking. The captain who wins the toss should bowl first and exploit the moisture in the surface if there is any.
Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (WK), Harry Brook (C), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Will Jacks, Sam Curran, Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson/Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Josh Tongue.
Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan (WK), Shreyas Iyer (C), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav.
