India and England faced off in the first ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday, July 14. Harry Brook won the toss and opted to bat first. Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell got their team off to a solid start, adding 61 runs inside 13 overs. However, India bounced back strongly, taking five of England's wickets while conceding only 19 runs.

Will Jacks was involved in a brief partnership with Joe Root before being dismissed in the 22nd over, as England were reeling at 107/6. However, Liam Dawson gave great company to Root and the duo stitched a remarkable 121-run stand off 134 balls. In the end, Root remained unbeaten on a run-a-ball 76, as England were bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs.

In reply, India's legendary duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could contribute only 11 and five runs, respectively. However, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer resurrected the ship with a 101-run partnership off 103 deliveries. Shubman had to retire hurt on 80 off 75 balls and this game England an opening. The hosts took the wickets of Shreyas and KL Rahul in quick succession as India were 160/4 in the 28th over.

Th onus was one India's spin-bowling duo - Axar Patel and Washington Sundar to take their team home. They did so in style, adding an unbeaten stand of 102 runs off 105 balls as India chased the target in 45.2 overs, with six wickets left in the bank.

Shubman Gill was instrumental in India's win. He showed his experience and weathered the storm after Kohli and Rohit were dismissed cheaply. The right-handed batter hit 11 fours and one six during his 80-run knock off 75 balls and rotated strike equally well.

Axar Patel was the pick of the bowlers for India. He picked up a four-for for the first time in his ODI career. The left-arm spinner bagged the wickets of Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, and Josh Tongue. He finished with figures of 4/62 in 9.5 overs, a spell that helped India wrap up the tail.

Axar Patel won the Player of the Match award for his all-round skills. The 32-year-old didn't just pick up four wickets but scored an unbeaten 57 off 52 balls with the help of five fours and one six to take India home from a tense position with Sundar for company.
