ENG vs IND 2026: Harry Brook-led England announce playing XI for 1st T20I in Durham
England have announced their playing XI for the opening T20I against India, set to be played on July 1 in Durham. Harry Brook will captain the side as England begin a new series against their biggest rivals in the shortest format. Brook last led England during the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, guiding them to the semi-finals before they were knocked out by India in Mumbai. Despite England's defeat, Jacob Bethell produced a magnificent century in a valiant losing effort, underlining his immense potential on the global stage.
The hosts have opted for a balanced lineup packed with all-rounders. Sam Curran, Will Jacks and Liam Dawson add depth by contributing with both bat and ball, giving England multiple bowling options while strengthening the batting order. Experienced leg-spinner Adil Rashid remains the lone specialist spinner and is expected to play a vital role through the middle overs.
India are yet to confirm their playing XI, with considerable attention focused on teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old was surprisingly left out of India's two-match T20I series against Ireland, which the visitors lost 2-0. Fans and cricket experts are hopeful he will finally receive his international debut in the series opener against England.
Sciver-Brunt passed fit for T20 World Cup semi-final
“I’ve committed completely to England cricket – I’ve said that I don’t want to play any franchise cricket barring the Hundred. Everything that I want to do is to play cricket for England, and whatever I do on and off the field is to try and perform as well as I possibly can for England. Hence the reason I don’t play in the IPL and PSL [Pakistan Super League] and all the other franchise competitions,” said Brook as quoted by News18.
“The fact I don’t play franchise cricket means there are periods in my calendar when I wouldn’t be playing cricket. I’d be focussing on my fitness and getting ready to play all three formats, which has been a dream of mine since I could speak or walk. If I am or I’m not captain for England in Test cricket, I’d happy to just still be playing for England,” he added.
Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, Harry Brook (captain), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Luke Wood
