ENG vs IND 2026: Persistent rain forces abandonment of first T20I in Durham

The opening T20I of the three-match series between England and India was abandoned without a result after persistent rain prevented any further play at Chester-le-Street, Durham, on July 1. Despite India posting a competitive total, the weather had the final say as the match was called off after a lengthy delay.

After winning the toss, India skipper Shreyas Iyer opted to bat first. The visitors had a shaky start as they lost two early wickets. Sanju Samson was dismissed by Saqib Mahmood, while Ishan Kishan was run out, leaving India under pressure in the powerplay.

India's innings was revived brilliantly by Abhishek Sharma and Iyer, who stitched together an attacking 82-run partnership for the third wicket in just 38 deliveries. Abhishek continued his aggressive form, smashing 59 runs off only 24 balls, including six fours and four sixes. His entertaining knock gave India the momentum they needed after the early setbacks.

Captain Iyer then anchored the innings with a composed yet fluent 68 off 47 deliveries. His knock featured six boundaries and a six as he ensured India maintained a healthy scoring rate through the middle overs. Shivam Dube provided the finishing touches with a powerful unbeaten 42 off just 21 balls, striking two fours and three sixes to propel India to a 189/7 in 20 overs.

For England, Saqib Mahmood was the standout bowler, finishing with impressive figures of 3/33 from his four overs. His early breakthroughs helped England keep India in check before the middle-order recovery.

However, shortly after the completion of India's innings, heavy rain arrived in Durham and forced the players off the field. The covers remained firmly in place as steady showers continued throughout the evening. Broadcaster Ian Ward noted on air that even if the rain had stopped, significant time would have been required to prepare the outfield and playing surface for a restart.

Despite an additional 30-minute buffer before overs needed to be reduced, the weather showed no signs of improving. With the rain continuing and insufficient time left to make the ground match-ready, the officials eventually decided to abandon the contest.

The result extends an unusual trend for India at Chester-le-Street, where all three of their completed visits have ended without a result, against England in ODIs in 2002 and 2011, and now in the T20I in 2026.

The teams will now shift their focus to the second T20I, scheduled to be played at Old Trafford in Manchester on July 4.
