ENG vs NZ 2026: Will Young replaces retired Kane Williamson in visitors' squad

New Zealand have named batter Will Young as a replacement for the recently retired Kane Williamson for the remaining two Tests of the ongoing series against England.

Williamson brought the curtain down on his illustrious international career on June 12, creating a major void in the BlackCaps setup ahead of the final two matches of the series. In response, the selectors have turned to the fairly experienced Young, who has been a consistent performer in New Zealand's domestic circuit and has represented the national side across formats.

The national cricket board confirmed that Young will arrive in England on Sunday, June 14, and will link up with the squad ahead of the second Test at The Oval, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, June 17.The right-handed batter has been rewarded with a call-up after continuing to impress in red-ball cricket. His inclusion adds valuable experience to the squad as New Zealand look to bounce back and remain competitive in the series.

Confirming the development, NZC released a statement welcoming Young into the touring party.

"A big welcome to Will Young, who joins the squad tomorrow as the team continues their prep for the second test against England starting this Wednesday 17 June. BLACKCAPS and Central Stags batter Will Young has been called into the Test squad in place of Kane Williamson for the remaining two Test matches against England," NZC posted on Saturday.

While replacing a player of Williamson's stature is never an easy task, Young has previously shown his ability to perform at the highest level and will now have an opportunity to cement his place in the Test side. With two matches still left in the series, the 33-year-old will be eager to make an immediate impact if given a chance in the playing XI.

New Zealand's preparations for the second Test will continue over the next few days, with Young expected to join training from Monday, June 15 as the visitors regroup following Williamson's retirement and focus on the remainder of the England tour.
