In the ever-evolving world of cricket, fans and experts often debate who stands out as the most complete modern-day player. With the game producing specialists in batting, bowling, and even fielding, identifying one cricketer who excels in all departments is never an easy task. Yet, when posed with this question, legendary voices from the past often bring unique perspectives shaped by their own values and experience. Recently, former England opener and cricket legend Geoffrey Boycott has named a star all-rounder as his favorite current cricketer.
Boycott has revealed that his favorite cricketer in the modern era is none other than India’s versatile all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Known for his candid views on the game and his traditional preference for Test cricket, Boycott’s choice reflects the immense respect Jadeja has earned through his consistency, energy, and multi-dimensional impact on the field.
Speaking on The Overlap Cricket YouTube channel, Boycott admitted that he took his time to consider the question before singling out Jadeja. Despite never having met the Indian star personally, the former England opener said he has always admired the way Jadeja involves himself in every aspect of the game.
“I like Jadeja. I’ve always liked him, though I don’t know him and have never met him. He’s always in the game. Bowls left-arm spin and his fielding is fantastic. What makes him stand out is not just what he does with bat and ball but the way he lifts his teammates with his energy. He fields so brilliantly, with such enthusiasm, and that inspires the whole side,” said Boycott.
Boycott further highlighted Jadeja’s balanced character, describing him as cheerful on the outside but mentally tough and fiercely competitive inside. He recalled Jadeja’s influence not only in international cricket but also in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has been instrumental in Chennai Super Kings‘ numerous title wins.
“Has a smile on his face but is tough inside. In Test matches and a lot of T20s, helping Chennai win it five times. Them and Mumbai have won it five each. He’s a top player and does everything I like about a cricketer—energy, smiles, tough underneath and competitive. He fields brilliantly,” Boycott added.

The statistics underline Boycott’s admiration. In Test cricket, Jadeja has amassed 3,886 runs at an average close to 38, with five centuries to his name. His batting has evolved from being a lower-order support act to a dependable middle-order option capable of rescuing India in crunch situations.
On the bowling front, Jadeja has claimed 330 wickets in red-ball cricket at an impressive average of 25.16, including 15 five-wicket hauls. His left-arm spin has often proven decisive on subcontinental pitches and equally effective in overseas conditions. Beyond numbers, his electric fielding—whether at point, cover, or the deep boundary—makes him one of the most complete cricketers of the modern game.
