'Enough is enough' - Michael Vaughan on Brendon McCullum-led English Test side

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has lambasted the Test side after their 160-run loss to New Zealand at Trent Bridge, which saw the Kiwis clinch a historic 2-1 series victory.

Chasing 373 in the final innings, the England team took the attack to the New Zealand bowlers, going hard at the target early. Skipper Ben Stokes, playing his final Test after his shock retirement announcement, opened the batting at the end of Day 4 and put up a 50-run stand with Ben Duckett. But poor shot-making followed, and England found themselves at 103 for 4 at the close of play. Vaughan expressed his frustrations at how England went about the chase.

“When I saw that on the fourth evening last week, I went ‘nah, we can’t accept that’ as ex-players in the game. And it was that period that I watched and I went ‘nah, enough is enough’. English cricket has got to be better than that," Vaughan said, speaking on the Stick to Cricket Podcast

England's recent record under coach Brendon McCullum has been worrisome, according to Vaughan. Since their win against India at Lord's in 2025, the Three Lions have won just two of the next ten Test matches, including a 4-1 drubbing in Australia during the Ashes. The former batter opined that England, who sit in seventh place in the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship and have never made the final of the competition, must move on from McCullum.

“I think Baz McCullum is a great guy but he’s not a great coach and for England. As ex-players and fans of English cricket, we should be aiming to be the number-one team in the world and at the minute we are ranked seventh. We’ve won two games in 10 matches, and those two wins have come at Lord’s on a cesspit and the MCG, which was a two-dayer, so the only two games that we’ve won have been on farmers’ fields," Vaughan said.

Vaughan has also criticised men's managing director Rob Key for his backing of the coach and the current set-up.

“I’m so frustrated watching it, it’s laughable. You’ve got to say that Rob Key’s job is on the line. It has to be on the line. It wouldn’t surprise me if Rob Key goes. They’re not being well coached. You are telling me if Andy Flower was in charge, this team would be getting the results they are getting? No chance," said Vaughan.

England's next Test assignment is a three-match home series against Pakistan in mid-August. All eyes will be on who takes the reins after Stokes' departure and whether McCullum keeps his place.
