Explained: What if Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals IPL 2025 match gets washed out due to rain

As Mumbai braces for heavy rainfall, all eyes are on the high-stakes Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) scheduled for May 21 at the Wankhede Stadium. With playoff spots hanging in the balance, a washout could dramatically alter the fate of both teams and the tournament itself.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy rain and gusty winds from May 21 to 24 due to a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea. On the eve of the match, thunderstorms and a downpour disrupted Delhi Capitals’ practice session, highlighting the seriousness of the weather threat. The IMD expects the intensity of rainfall to increase during this period, raising concerns about the possibility of the match being abandoned without a ball being bowled.
According to IPL 2025 playing conditions, if rain interrupts play, organizers will attempt to complete a full 20-over match using an extended window. The IPL recently updated its rules, allowing up to 120 minutes of extra time for the final league games to maximize the chances of a result. If conditions permit, even a five-over-per-side match can be held, provided play starts before the cut-off time (typically 10:56 PM IST, with the toss by 10:41 PM IST). If no play is possible, the match will be declared a “No Result,” and both teams will receive one point each.
This encounter is a virtual knockout, with both MI and DC vying for a single remaining playoff berth. Mumbai Indians currently sit fourth on the points table with 14 points and a strong net run rate (NRR) of 1.156, while Delhi Capitals are just behind in fifth with 13 points and an NRR of +0.260. A win for MI would guarantee their playoff spot and eliminate DC from contention. Conversely, a DC victory would keep their hopes alive, requiring another win in their final league match to qualify.

Both teams will receive one point.
MI will move to 15 points, while DC will reach 14.
MI’s superior NRR would likely keep them ahead in the playoff race, but their qualification would depend on the results of other remaining matches.
DC would be left needing a win in their final league game and hoping for favourable results elsewhere to sneak into the top four.
Unlike the playoffs, there is no reserve day for IPL league matches. The only contingency is the extended two-hour window to accommodate delays, after which the match is called off if play remains impossible.
