The IPL 2026 clash between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Friday grabbed attention not just for the contest itself, but also for two omissions from the playing XIs – Jacob Duffy and Tushar Deshpande. Both players had been part of their teams’ plans in recent games, making their absence a talking point among fans. However, a closer look reveals that these were not injury-related setbacks but calculated tactical decisions based on team balance and match strategy.

Duffy’s absence from the RCB lineup came as a surprise, especially considering the impact he had made in the early stages of the tournament. The New Zealand pacer had impressed with his consistency and wicket-taking ability, picking up five wickets in his first two matches. His disciplined line and length, combined with his ability to extract movement, had made him a valuable asset for RCB’s bowling unit.

However, team selection in T20 cricket often revolves around combinations rather than individual performances alone. In this case, Duffy had to make way for the return of Australian fast-bowling leader Josh Hazlewood.

RCB captain Rajat Patidar clarified the decision at the toss, stating, “Unfortunately, Duffy misses out this game. Josh (Hazlewood) in the place of Duffy.” While acknowledging Duffy’s strong performances, Patidar emphasized the importance of Hazlewood’s experience and skillset.

Hazlewood’s return is significant for multiple reasons. He was RCB’s leading wicket-taker during their successful IPL 2025 campaign and has consistently delivered in high-pressure situations across formats. Although he missed the initial matches of IPL 2026 due to hamstring and Achilles concerns following the Ashes, his full recovery made him an automatic choice for the playing XI.

From a tactical standpoint, Hazlewood offers control in the powerplay as well as reliability at the death – qualities that are crucial in tight contests. His height and accuracy also allow him to generate bounce, which can be particularly effective on certain surfaces. While Duffy had done little wrong, the team management opted for a more experienced option to strengthen their bowling attack.

On the other side, RR also made a notable change by leaving out pacer Deshpande. Unlike Duffy’s case, this move was more about rotation and tactical flexibility rather than a direct replacement by a star player.

RR captain Riyan Parag explained the decision at the toss, saying, “Tushar (Deshpande) takes a rest, Brijesh (Sharma) comes in.” This indicates that the team management is carefully managing player workload while also exploring different bowling options.

Deshpande has been a dependable performer in the IPL over the years, known for his ability to bowl in challenging phases like the death overs. However, with a long tournament like the IPL, teams often rotate their bowlers to keep them fresh and avoid fatigue or injuries.

In his place, Brijesh Sharma was brought into the playing XI. The 27-year-old had already shown promise earlier in the season, including a tidy spell against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) where he picked up a wicket while maintaining control. His inclusion suggests that RR were looking to test bench strength while also tailoring their attack to specific match conditions.
