Explained: Why Shreyas Iyer is not playing the 2nd Unofficial Test against Australia A?

India A’s second Unofficial Test against Australia A began with a major development as Shreyas Iyer withdrew from the game citing personal reasons. The middle-order batter, who captained India A in the first match of the series, informed the BCCI and selectors ahead of the fixture that he would not be available. He subsequently returned to Mumbai before the start of play.
The announcement raised eyebrows since Iyer had recently returned to the longer format and was looking to cement his position in the Test setup ahead of India’s upcoming series against the West Indies. Importantly, his withdrawal was not injury-related, as clarified by team sources and officials.
With Shreyas Iyer unavailable, wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel was appointed captain of India A for the ongoing second Unofficial Test. Jurel, who has been a rising name in red-ball cricket, now carries the responsibility of leading a talented lineup featuring KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal and Mohammed Siraj.
India A’s Playing XI for the contest includes: N Jagadeesan, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Dhruv Jurel (c & wk), Ayush Badoni, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar and Manav Suthar.
On the other hand, Australia A, led by Nathan McSweeney, has fielded a balanced squad with players like Josh Philippe, Todd Murphy, and Henry Thornton. Their XI consists of Sam Konstas, Campbell Kellaway, Nathan McSweeney (c), Oliver Peake, Cooper Connolly, Josh Philippe (wk), Jack Edwards, Will Sutherland, Corey Rocchiccioli, Todd Murphy and Henry Thornton.

Iyer’s absence is particularly notable because he was entrusted with the captaincy in the first Unofficial Test, although his batting form did not inspire confidence. He managed only 8 runs before being dismissed cheaply, raising questions about his readiness to reclaim a spot in India’s senior Test team.
While selectors have clarified that Iyer’s withdrawal was due to personal reasons alone, the timing of the decision could still have an impact on his Test selection prospects. With the West Indies series looming, missing an opportunity to stake a claim through strong performances against Australia A may complicate his case.
Despite speculation, reports indicate that Iyer remains in contention for national selection. His experience in the middle order and prior contributions in red-ball cricket continue to make him a valuable option. However, the selectors will also consider the form of players currently in action for India A, such as Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan, who are vying for similar spots.
