England Women registered their second win of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, defeating Bangladesh Women by four wickets in a competitive encounter at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Former skipper Heather Knight played a vital role with a composed 83-run innings, guiding England to a successful chase of 179 after Bangladesh posted a modest total of 178 in their first innings.

Opting to bat first after losing the toss, Bangladesh Women endured an inconsistent innings. While Sobhana Mostary provided much-needed stability with a well-constructed 60 off 108 balls, the rest of the top order struggled against England’s disciplined bowling attack. Sharmin Akhter chipped in with 30 runs off 52 balls, but Bangladesh’s progress slowed down significantly through the middle overs.

England’s spinners took full advantage of the conditions. Sophie Ecclestone once again proved her class, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 24 in her 10-over spell. Charlotte Dean and Linsey Smith provided crucial support, picking up two wickets each and keeping the pressure on the Bangladeshi batters.

Just when Bangladesh seemed set for a below-par total, Rabeya Khan’s late flourish changed the tone of the innings. The lower-order batter played a fiery knock of 43 off just 27 balls, smashing six fours and a six to propel her side to 178 before they were bowled out in 49.4 overs.

In reply, England’s top order found themselves under early pressure. Marufa Akter’s sharp inswingers removed both Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones cheaply, leaving England at 14 for 2. The pressure increased when Sophia Dunkley and Emma Lamb also fell without contributing much, but Heather Knight held firm amid the flurry of wickets.

Knight showcased her trademark composure, rotating the strike and finding timely boundaries to rebuild England’s innings. Partnering with Natalie Sciver, she added 74 runs for the fourth wicket, steadying the chase. Sciver’s 32 off 41 balls included five crisp boundaries before she was trapped in front by Fahima Khatun.

Even as Bangladesh kept striking at intervals, Knight’s presence ensured England stayed on track. Her knock of 83 off 112 balls, laced with nine fours and a six, became the cornerstone of England’s chase. Dean played a valuable supporting hand with an unbeaten 23 from 55 deliveries, guiding England past the finish line in 46.1 overs.

Khatun emerged as Bangladesh’s standout bowler, claiming three wickets for just 16 runs in her economical 10-over spell. Marufa Akter also impressed with her pace and control, bagging two wickets early on. However, the lack of sustained pressure in the middle overs allowed England to regain momentum through Knight’s leadership and experience.

For her match-winning 83 and calm leadership under pressure, Knight was rightly adjudged the Player of the Match. England’s victory not only strengthens their position in the points table but also highlights their depth and resilience, while Bangladesh can take heart from a spirited display, especially from Mostary and Rabeya.

Heather Knight: 15 off 50, then 64 off 61 with wickets tumbling around her. Serious knock, her first proper hit since May. Still absolutely massive for this England team.

Good on Heather Knight for saying that about the catch. Not her fault what the third umpire decided.
