The Arun Jaitley Stadium witnessed a spectacle on Sunday as India’s batting star Smriti Mandhana smashed a record-breaking century in just 50 balls against Australia in the third and final ODI of the series. With this blazing knock, she not only set the crowd alight but also carved her name into cricket history by becoming the fastest Indian – across men’s and women’s ODIs – to reach a hundred.
Mandhana’s explosive ton bettered Virat Kohli’s 52-ball century against Australia in 2013, which had stood as the fastest by an Indian in ODIs. She also shattered her own women’s record of a 70-ball ton against Ireland, proving just how far she has pushed the boundaries of Indian cricket.
Her half-century came off just 23 balls, another record for Indian women’s cricket, setting the tone for what was to follow.
Globally, Mandhana’s 50-ball ton now ranks as the second-fastest century in Women’s ODI history, only behind Meg Lanning’s 45-ball masterclass.
The significance of this feat wasn’t lost on fans, who roared with every boundary and flooded social media with praise.
The defining moment came when Mandhana brought up her hundred with a towering slog-sweep off Alana King for six. The stadium erupted instantly, with fans waving flags and cheering her name as India’s vice-captain raised her bat with a smile that spoke volumes about her achievement.
Every shot she played – whether it was a crisp cover drive or a powerful pull- kept the crowd on its feet. Clips of her boundaries went viral within minutes, with hashtags like #SmritiMandhana and #INDvsAUS trending worldwide.
Mandhana eventually departed after scoring 125 runs off just 63 deliveries, a knock laced with 17 fours and 5 sixes. While her dismissal brought a momentary hush, her innings has put India in a commanding position during the mammoth 413-run chase.
