India Women created history at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, lifting their maiden ICC Women’s World Cup title after a commanding 52-run win over South Africa Women in the grand finale. Powered by Shafali Verma’s explosive 87 and Deepti Sharma’s all-round brilliance, India outplayed the Proteas in every department to script a golden chapter in women’s cricket history.

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, South Africa were met with fierce resistance from India’s top order. Shafali, known for her fearless approach, once again rose to the occasion, smashing a blistering 87 off 78 balls, decorated with seven boundaries and two sixes. Her partnership with Smriti Mandhana, who contributed a fluent 45 off 58 balls, gave India the perfect foundation in front of a roaring home crowd.

After both openers departed, Jemimah Rodrigues (24) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (20) steadied the innings before Deepti took charge in the latter half. The left-hander played with composure and class, notching up a vital 58 off 58 deliveries, featuring three fours and a six. Richa Ghosh’s quickfire 34 off 24 further accelerated India’s total as the Women in Blue posted an imposing 298/7 in 50 overs.

For South Africa, Ayabonga Khaka was the standout performer, claiming 3 for 58, while Nonkululeko Mlaba, Nadine de Klerk, and Chloe Tryon chipped in with one wicket each. Despite disciplined spells from the Proteas, India’s batting depth ensured a strong finish.

Chasing 299 under lights, South Africa began steadily with Laura Wolvaardt once again leading from the front. The skipper crafted a magnificent 101 off 98 balls, studded with 11 boundaries and a six, keeping South Africa’s hopes alive. She found brief support from Tazmin Brits (23) and Sune Luus (25), but India’s bowlers struck at regular intervals to apply pressure.

The breakthrough came from a surprise source — Shafali Verma. The young all-rounder, fresh from her batting heroics, turned the game with the ball by dismissing Luus and Marizanne Kapp in quick succession. Her double strike rattled the Proteas, shifting momentum decisively towards India.

The rest was Deepti’s show. The experienced off-spinner bowled with guile and control, dismantling the middle and lower order to finish with match-winning figures of 5 for 39 in 9.3 overs. Her spell ensured South Africa’s chase ended at 246 all out in 45.3 overs, despite late resistance from Annerie Dercksen (35) and Nadine de Klerk (18).
